A camping theme is at the heart of the activities, along with an advancement award system, whereby Royal Rangers must demonstrate specific knowledge and abilities in order to be recognized as earning each award. In the words of Johnnie Barnes, the founder of Royal Rangers in 1962, it is the purpose of Royal Rangers to reach, teach and keep boys (and girls) for Jesus Christ.
